Mod_Mary: Okay, then I'd like to formally introduce Nancy Freedman-Smith CPDT, owner of Gooddogz Training Portland ME. #barkoutloud

Mod_Lorie: Q1 Why teach tricks to your dog? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A1 teaching tricks will teach you to be better trainers #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A1 Improve bond-Keep minds busy-Great way to tire out a dog!more U teach more they can learn-Teach dog how to learn #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary: @gooddogz Ive noticed that w both my dogs.. keeps me sharp. Others? #barkoutloud

DaisyWunderDog: RT @Mod_Mary: @gooddogz Ive noticed that w both my dogs.. keeps me sharp. Others? Yup! #barkoutloud

WillMyDogHateMe: It will also impress the hell out of others, no? #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: Keeping them busy is a good thing with weather issues, tiring is a good thing #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: Both of my dogs have different learning styles. Our goal is to teach our dogs to be operant. Have to do something to get something #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: For those of us that are beginners, dogs are forgiving as we learn, noticed that #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: RT @tacrabtree: For those of us that are beginners, dogs are forgiving as we learn, noticed that <,agree 100 %. #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary@tacrabtree Tell us what you mean... #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: She thrieves on the learning. I can see the wheels spinning. Now the look in her eyes, what next mom? #barkoutloud

jodituckett: confidence building? also, benefit to being successful. success=reinforcing #barkoutloud

dancingdogblog: A1 the learning to do something to get something keeps attention where it belongs, too, and yes @Mod_Mary the confidence! #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: Q2: What is the difference between teaching your dog a trick and a basic command? Do you teach them in the same way? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: Q2 NOTHING!! Everything we do with our dogs is a trick. #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: When you say learning styles you mean diff breed learn differently? #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: my challenge is lab, bright & eager & hound, smart but seems lazy, doesn't have that same drive to please me as I know it #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: lab=retriever hound=smelling, tracking #barkoutloud

Mod_Lorie: Q3 Can you give examples of some easy tricks? #barkoutloud

fearfuldogs: Even the language we use affects our interactions w our dogs. Tricks=play. Play=good. #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: Q3 spin, paw, crawl, roll over , ring a bell, easy button #barkoutloud

CosmoHavanese: I luv doing tricks. I get good treats, and mom let's me figure things out on my own, so I learn!! #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary@tacrabtree I think so, yes. trick=play #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: tricks just reward based? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz@tacrabtree define reward? do you work for free? Yes rewards will let the dog know what you want #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: but a chance to play/learn more can be the reward, no?

Gooddogz@svilardo some people call it "jolly voice" dogs can learn words jsut about anything as a cue. EVen cups and plates! #barkoutloud

fearfuldogs: I mean that our language affects how we perceive the experience. #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A3 Dogs are more visual learners actually.

DaisyWunderDog: RT @gooddogz: A3? Dogs are more visual learners actually. Is that why Daisy picks up tricks easier aftr watching another dog? #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: voice important, English lady's doing "walkies" dogs loved to follow. Jolly voice for all, reward encourages focus for next task #barkoutloud

jodituckett: not likely to ask for 'roll over' in a stern voice!;) #barkoutloud

jodituckett: i've heard dr dunbar argue value of flat tone when asking for obedience cues so dog will respond in various envm'ts #barkoutloud

jodituckett: you're not going to use jolly talk to ask a dog for a distance stay if it is running in front of a car. thought that was good point #barkoutloud

svilardo@gooddogz Please explain breaking down tricks...Can you give an example? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: we need to break down a trick into multisteps and reward each along the way for final product (behavior chain) #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: I was teaching skateboarding to a dog who was getting it. Next dog was afraid and was rewarded for touching. 1 #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: Gotcha one builds on the next #barkoutloud

DaisyWunderDog: what dogs learn from watching other dogs is so interesting! #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: @DaisyWunderDog what dogs learn from watching other dogs is so interesting! You're not kidding! Good&Bad #barkoutloud

phxdogblogger@gooddogz, @DaisyWunderDog One of mine learned sit/beg from the other. Too funny! (dogs learn from other dogs - so interesting!) #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: So that brings us to Q4: How can teaching tricks help us improve as trainers? And dogs as learners? (Pls put A4 in your comments) #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: So this builds each dog's self esteem as you go #barkoutloud

barrie_tc@Mod_Lorie Q4 so we are defining "trick" as any behavior? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A4 all dogs learn slightly dif. than others. I guarantee it will improve your timing and understanding of your dog. #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary@gooddogz A4 this is what you mean by "learning styles"? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A4 keeps us consistent as trainers... consistent in command and in maintaining our criteria for success #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: RT @tacrabtree: So this builds each dogs self esteem as you go <<yes, but bonding is what it's all about #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: RT @Mod_Mary: @gooddogz A4 this is what you mean by "learning styles"? <yes #barkoutloud

DaisyWunderDog: RT @gooddogz: RT @tacrabtree: So this builds each dogs self esteem as u go <<yes, but bonding is what its all about-been my exp too #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: That eye to eye contact very important in the bonding, getting their full attention #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: A4 And this is part of learning as trainers to break down learning steps, I think. #barkoutloud

barrie_tc: RT @CosmoHavanese A4 consistent in command and in maintaing our criteria 4 success < eek on use of word command rather than cue! #barkoutloud

dogloversdigest: If you have a video camera, taping your training sessions is an excellent way to develop chops and see what ur dog is cueing on. #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: Please I need help in breaking down the learning steps. Can you give an example of what u r breaking down? #barkoutloud

CosmoHavanese@barrie_tc ahh, you have a point... .cue!!!! #barkoutloud

barrie_tc: RT @tacrabtree: Please I need help in breaking down the learning steps - @gooddogz can u break down a behavior chain for ppl? #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: A4 RT @tacrabtree: Please I need help in breaking down the learning steps. Can you give an example of what u r breaking down? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: roll over for example broken is broken down into multiple steps. down, elbow tuck, on hip, on side, on back to other side #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: ok never looked at it this wayRT @gooddogz: roll over id broken down into muyltip steps. down, elbow tuck, on hip, on side, on... #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: That eye to eye contact very important in the bonding, getting their full attention #barkoutloud

Gooddogz@tacrabtree: Attention more so, many tricks involve looking away #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: tricks looking away - example? RT @gooddogz: @tacrabtree: Attention more so, many tricks involve looking away #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary@gooddogz which is why it's a darned diff. one to teach...? #barkoutloud

CosmoHavanese@gooddogz Is that what you mean by fluid?? breaking down to multiple steps? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: all bits of behavior are rewarded along the way. NO LUMPING Lumping is rewarding only the end behavior #barkoutloud

Gooddogz@CosmoHavanese fluid is another word for already learned and proofed #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: my fault, I've been trying to do it all in 1 step #barkoutloud

barrie_tc@tacrabtree focus on splitting not lumping :-) #barkoutloud

Mod_Lorie: Q5 What makes a trick easy to teach vs. more difficult? #barkoutloud

jodituckett: some tricks r more complicated than others. 'watch me' vs. roll over. r.o. has a lot more to breakdown bc there are a # of steps #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A5 Your dog! Not all dogs should be asked to do all tricks. Bevhiors your dog "offers" are easiest to teach. #barkoutloud

svilardo@gooddogz What to use as rewards? Some say treats, others say play...what's your take? #barkoutloud

DaisyWunderDog: RT @barrie_tc: @Mod_Lorie @gooddogz just answered that, whatever your dog finds rewarding is the reward :-) Praise works too. #barkoutloud

CosmoHavanese@Mod_Lorie @Mod_Mary @svilardo @gooddogz Reward depends on the doggie. Some are motivated by treats, some by toys. Pick their fave! #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: click/treat to me #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: A5 Click/treat can be a reward, but some dogs afraid of clicker...! #barkoutloud

svilardo@gooddogz A5 in that case, my dog already knows "speak" :) #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary: A1 I have one dog who likes any trick that is scent related... but not crazy about other tricks.. #barkoutloud

barrie_tc: A5 an example would be asking a long bodied dog to hold a "sit pretty" with no support #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: ok my dogs are total opposites, so tricks will have to be different even tho done at same time. challenging #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A5 tricks with multisteps (behavior chain are more difficult. Like get wallet, steal money put wallet back #barkoutloud

jodituckett: teach 'mouthy' dogs tricks that involve carrying things (cattle dogs good at this) ("take it") #barkoutloud

jodituckett: A5 cld u explain shaping a trick? #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary: RT @gooddogz: u guys r so getting it! #barkoutloud

DaisyWunderDog@gooddogz I taught Daisy to stretch by saying it every time she did it. Now she does it on cue. LOL! #barkoutloud

dogloversdigest: Physical limitations need to be considered when teaching tricks. Dogs with sore hips don't like a lot of up and down. :) #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: i think shaping is another question, but yes I will #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A lets hit up free shaping k? #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: So, @gooddogz are there any breeds for whom learning tricks is easier? I'm sure we all have our opinions! #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: A - Shaping is waaaay cool and it is a hard concept for people that have never let their dogs THINK pick up at first #barkoutloud

svilardo@Mod_Hilary Yea,...your dog is easier than my dog...guaranteed ;) #barkoutloud

jodituckett: what type of dog can u do a lot of shaping w/then? (not breed - personality type) #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: whate the difference between shaping a trick and targeting? #barkoutloud

dogloversdigest: 101 things to do with a box is a nice shaping exercise for beginners, a nice vid here #barkoutloud

jodituckett: tried "100 things to do with a box) (s yin). took my dog a while. she's only every had +r training. #barkoutloud

Gooddogz@tacrabtree tageting sends dog to a place, hand, target, target stick. shaping is free form and allows for imagination. #barkoutloud

barrie_tc: RT @gooddogz: True confession : I cheat at 101 things to do with a box and put food under dish towel to start a dog off < LOL!!!!!! #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary@gooddogz the truth comes out. #barkoutloud

barrie_tc@gooddogz Q6 best book for shaping fundamentals? #barkoutloud

dogloversdigest@gooddogz Don't consider that cheating, gets em interested to start. ! :) #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: RT @dogloversdigest: @gooddogz Dont consider that cheating, gets em interested to start. ! :) <<agree, but not purist version #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: so a dog taking hand commands to go find someone in a field. By hand signals u tell them which way to go, which one is that? #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary: an earlier ? how do you go about marking and capturing without disturbing, for instance, "settle down" and not get them excited? #barkoutloud

jodituckett: i tried putting food in/under as well. so she gets trt, then gets another from me for trying? or lots of verbal praise to coincide? #barkoutloud

barrie_tc@gooddogz a purist considers u looking at the box luring!!!! eek!! #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: starting lab out in house to go where I want her to go, then come back. Is this just fun for me or is she really learning? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: for shaping fundementals, read susan garret on line rules of shaping and karen pryors on line rules of shaping #barkoutloud

Finch93: RT @svilardo: RT @dogloversdigest 101 things to do with a box is a nice shapng exercise for beginners, #barkoutloud
YouTube - 101 Things to Do With a Box - Beginner‎ - youtube.com

SVilardo: @gooddogz - how do ufigure out best training techniques for your dog? Trial and error? *Others, plz answer as well* #barkoutloud

barrie_tc@tacrabtree dogs are always learning, it is up to u to see if what they are learning fits into what u want them to learn :-) #barkoutloud

Gooddogz@tacrabtree dogs R always learninhg, we just need to be careful what and how we teach them #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: I also like Clicking with Your Dog by Peggy Tillman, and Click Dog Training System by Karen Pryor (which I found in a dumpster!) #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: so for beginners seems like we really need some formal training with prof to get dog started then we can keep it going? #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: re pro help. hard to tell. maybe maybe not. books, videos, friends (or pay me to come over) #barkoutloud

Mod_Hilary: Paying pro is good thing! RT @gooddogz re pro help. hard to tell. maybe maybe not. books, videos, friends (or pay me to come over) #barkoutloud

barrie_tc: BTW, Susan Garrett's site is www.clickerdogs.com #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: I want to face food asap, so I try to find best, fastest way to get it through to my dog #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: remember all trainers are NOT created equal, never do anything to your dog that isn't kind. #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: encouraging stuff, I need to be more focused to make sure she is doing what I really want to build on, not just what's cute! #barkoutloud

DaisyWunderDog: And remember to interview the trainer before just trusting anyone with the title-what methods do they use, etc. #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary: You can find Nancy here, on the web: www.gooddogztraining.com www.mainepets.com www.dogsndstorks.com #barkoutloud

Gooddogz: on my blog click "tricks" in the clouds for lots of good info

Mod_Mary: Well, Our chat is coming to a close..... : ( Wow... the hour goes so fast! #barkoutloud

Gooddogz @svilardo for tricks, I do a few minutes before meals, and only train as long as the food holds out - good idea! #barkoutloud

barrie_tc@svilardo I think it is helpful to count out ur treats b4 u start a session #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: I have assumed as long as they are interested, when bored move on #barkoutloud

Gooddogz@tacrabtree U should train and STOP when dog's intesest is highest. Leave em wanting more, not bored or confused #barkoutloud

dogloversdigest: I prefer several short sessions vs long ones. Short and sweet keeps it happy and upbeat. Really good for ending on a up note. #barkoutloud

tacrabtree: fabulous, thought that was what I should do. Actually have been starting that #barkoutloud

Mod_Mary: Please join me in saying "thanks" to Nancy this evening! #barkoutloud
