This video is from the CATalyst Council. It provides a great recap on what you need to know about feeding your cat.
Some of the key points from the video include:
- Cats are not small dogs. They have specialized nutritional requirements, such as specific amino acids that need to be included in their diet. As a result, they should be fed food specifically designed for cats. Dog food is not a safe diet to feed your cat.
- Cats should be fed multiple small meals. Food puzzles are a great way to accomplish this. They can provide much needed exercise and mental stimulation for your cat as well.
- Obesity is the number one nutritional disease of domestic cats. Cats with weight issues are at increased risk for diabetes and arthritis. Feed your cat to keep him lean.
- The feline diet should be personalized to fit the needs of each individual cat. No one diet will be the best diet for all cats.
- Consider feeding a combination of wet and dry foods. The moisture content in the wet food is important for maintaining urinary tract health.
- Contrary to popular belief, hairballs are NOT normal. Frequent vomiting (with or without hairballs) should not be ignored and should prompt a visit to your veterinarian.

This video is brought to you by the CATalyst Council. If you’re a cat lover and are unfamiliar with CATalyst Council, I urge you to check them out. You can also follow them on Twitter at @catalystcouncil or on Facebook. I’ll admit to being prejudiced (because I’m doing some of the social media for Catalyst Council) but I think they’re a wonderful organization that provides a great deal of much needed information about cats and cat care.
