Today, for those of you who are not already aware, is National Pit Bull Awareness Day. The pit bull breeds have, unfortunately, earned a reputation (especially within the media, it seems) as vicious and unpredictable dogs. In my experience, this reputation is far from being deserved.
While I have met some pit bulls that are aggressive, I’ve met many more (both in my veterinary practice and in the “real world”) that have wonderful temperaments and make great pets. Most even make great family dogs! Mango, the pit bull featured in the photo above, is a good example. She lives in a house-full of children and loves all of them.
Frankly, in my veterinary practice, I worry more about the chihuahuas than I do about the pit bulls becoming aggressive. You know how those little dogs with the big attitudes can be. (Before any of you chihuahua lovers get your backs up, I do like the breed, attitude and all!)
There are many blogs that are celebrating National Pit Bull Awareness Day today. I’d like to feature three of my favorites. Hop on over and take a look at what they have say.
The first is Cindy Lu’s Muse, whose post celebrating National Pit Bull Awareness Day 2011 features great videos, photos and even an infographic about pit bulls. The infographic ends with the words: “Warning: Pit Bulls Are Known to Steal Warm Spots on the Couch and Spread Happiness.” I think that just about says it all!
The next post is from Doggie Stylish who is celebrating National Pit Bull Awareness Day with pictures, lots of amazingly cute pictures of pit bulls.
Finally, Start the Change blog features a post which includes some great information about the temperament of pit bulls. Hop on over and see how four of the popular pit bulls breeds fare in temperament testing. (Hint: think really high!)
