Dog Training Facts and Figures: Where Do You and Your Dog Fit?

by on July 12, 2011 · 6 comments

Take a look at this very fascinating and fun infographic from Pet365.com. You’ll find some interesting statistics related to dog training based on a survey.

For instance, did you know that most people think their own dog is better trained than their friends and neighbors think he is trained? It’s true, at least according to these survey results.

And what about socializing puppies? Does it really work? Yes, it does. And amazingly, owners that have owned three or more dogs are much more likely to socialize their new puppy than first-time puppy owners. In fact, they are almost twice as likely to do so.

What do you consider the most important command you can teach your dog? In this survey, the “recall” command was thought to be the most important but the “stay” command was the most widely taught.

And thankfully, “99.5% of people now believe that rewarding a dog for good behaviour is an acceptable training method. As for the other 0.5%… they generally found training harder than others (although the sample was so small that it’s hard to tell if that was coincidence or not).” Now that’s good news!

Now, it’s your turn. How well do you think your dog is trained? Do you agree that “recall” is the most important command a dog can be taught? What would you do differently in training your dog if you could start over?

Recall is asking your dog to come back to you. It’s helpful if he’s entering a threatening situation.

Another command that I think is essential is “leave it” – asking your dog to drop something or leave a potentially dangerous object alone.
