The great folks at PurinaCare® Pet Health Insurance asked me to pass along these five fun New Year’s resolutions you should make to your pet.
Don’t worry. Unlike a lot of the resolutions we make each year, these are actually pretty easy resolutions to keep.
As a proud pet owner, I promise to:
- Walk you a little longer (actually, this is a promise to us both).
- Brush your teeth more often to keep them pearly white.
- Give you a few more baths and grooms to make sure you always look, and feel, your best.
- Let you sit in my lap or curl up next to me as often as I can.
- Play with you. Fetch, chase the mouse or other game you love because I love you.
Of course, in a gesture of gratitude, your pet will make some New Year’s resolutions of her own.
As your furry best friend, I promise to:
- Look at you with my big, sparkly eyes like you are the most important person in the world to me (because you are!).
- Wag my tail when you get home, even if you only left for a few minutes.
- Purr more so you know just how happy I am with you.
- Listen to anything you want to tell me. Your secrets are safe with me.
- Make you feel a little better whenever I’m around because you’re the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Lorie, I thought that bathing too often (unless for therapeutic reasons) isn’t the best idea as if nothing else it washes off the natural protective skin oils?
Hi, Jana.
The resolution is pretty vague as far as how often to bathe or groom. It may be more applicable to those folks that only get around to bathing their dog once or twice a year
Honestly, I think it’s pretty safe to bathe most healthy dogs as often as every couple of weeks, or perhaps even more often if the dog has been playing in the mud or some other activity that has left him dirty. This may vary a bit from one dog to another. Some dogs may benefit from more frequent bathing, such as those that suffer from allergies or other skin diseases. Those would some of the therapeutic reasons you spoke about.
And of course, regular brushing is a necessity for some dogs to keep them from becoming matted and tangled. But almost all dogs can benefit from regular brushing. Plus many dogs enjoy the activity and, if so, it can be a good bonding exercise for the pet and the owner.
