Today, I’d like to introduce you to the Fully Vetted blog. Fully Vetted is written by Patty Khuly, a Florida veterinary who also writes. In her own words, she writes “a lot”.
Some of you may remember Dr. Khuly from Dolittler.com. She transitioned from Dolittler to Fully Vetted in early 2010. However, she’s been blogging since 2005. You may also recognize her from her USA Today and The Miami Herald columns.
Pet Lover? Vet Voyeur?
The tagline for the blog reads: “A veterinary blog for pet lovers and vet voyeurs”. Now how can that not draw you into reading further? I still laugh when I see that tagline. I just love that phrase “vet voyeur”. Doesn’t it sound just the tiniest bit risque?
What Is Fully Vetted All About?
Fully Vetted covers a variety of pet-related topics, ranging from dogs that love to chew to smart phone applications for pets to second lives for common pet drugs.
Fearmongering in Veterinary Medicine
One of my favorite recent posts on Fully Vetted is Professional Liability and Fearmongering in Vet Medicine. I can fully relate to Dr. Khuly’s reaction to the tactics used by professional liability insurers.
Most of you probably don’t know but the PLIT through the AVMA is probably the largest supplier of veterinary malpractice insurance in the United States. Periodically, the PLIT sends newsletters filled with scary scenarios in which veterinarians are involved in lawsuits and other forms of litigation. Sometimes the veterinarian made a mistake and sometimes they didn’t. Either way, the newsletter presents frightening scenarios in which reputations are tarnished and participants are tied up in a legal process for long periods of time. Like Dr. Khuly, I realize that these scenarios are geared toward scaring me into believing that I need their insurance. Also like Dr. Khuly, I will probably keep my veterinary malpractice insurance up to date because the marketing works, even if it is fearmongering!
Does Your Veterinarian Need to Look Things Up?
Another of the Fully Vetted articles that hit home for me is What Does It Say About Your Vet if She’s Got to Look Something Up? This article talks about clients that trust their veterinarian less if/when she needs to refer to text books or the internet to obtain information. And apparently there are studies in the field of human medicine that say this happens. It just doesn’t make any sense to me though. Why would a veterinarian be less believable and less trustworthy because she admits she has limitations and needs to refer to an authoritative source to get the information she needs? Would you rather have your veterinarian take a shot in the dark and hope she’s right? I wouldn’t!
Honestly, I really like this blog. I enjoy Dr. Khuly’s sense of humor but she also passes on some very serious messages in an easy-to-swallow way. Take a look. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I love Dr Patty Khuly’s blog, read it all the time. (after yours of course)
I also had a lot to say to the article Does Your Veterinarian Need to Look Things Up?
Not knowing is not a crime. Not wanting to learn is. Nobody knows everything. Somebody that doesn’t know something doesn’t scare me. Somebody who thinks they do does!
Hi, Jana.
Dr. Khuly really does a wonderful job with her blog, doesn’t she?
I agree with you about having to look something up. I’d much rather have a doctor who says “I’m not sure but I’ll find out for you”. People who try to “bluff” their way through something they’re not knowledgable about scare me too, especially when it deals with my health or my pet’s health!
Hi Dr. Lorie! I saw this just as I was trying to organize the lists of all the blogs I like! (Your link works
) Thank you! I love Dr. Khuly’s writing too, and did not realize she was at “Fully Vetted.” BTW, I keep my insurance up to date, but I do NOT open PLIT’s newsletters!
You’re SO smart, Shawn. Or I should say Dr. Finch
I shouldn’t open those letters either but it’s just this morbid fascination. Sort of like driving by an accident on the highway..you know you shouldn’t look but you just can’t help yourself…LOL.
I love Dr. Khuly’s writing too. I’m glad I could help you find her Fully Vetted blog. It’s such a great blog!
