Idexx Laboratories reported today (December 21, 2009) the first confirmed case of H1N1 influenza found in a dog in the United States. The test was repeated at Iowa State University’s Diagnostic and was again found to be positive.
Symptoms of Canine H1N1 Influenza
According to Idexx Laboratories, Buck is a 13-year old mixed breed neutered male dog. He was treated initially with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications with no favorable response. Two days later, Buck was taken to a hospital in New York on an emergency call. He had a dry cough and a fever. He was also lethargic and not eating. His owner reported a recent case of flu-like symptoms as well.
Buck was admitted to the hospital, and treated there for 48 hours. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and subsequent testing for the H1N1 influenza virus proved to be the cause of Buck’s pneumonia.
Currently, Buck is reported to be doing well at home, appears to be recovering and is scheduled for a follow-up visit with his veterinarian later in the week.
What if You Think Your Dog has an H1N1 Influenza Virus Infection?
Symptoms of influenza in dogs are:
- coughing
- sneezing
- nasal discharge
- fever
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
- rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
These symptoms can also be caused by a number of other diseases. However, if your dog is symptomatic or is not acting “right”, you should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.
Protecting Your Dog From H1N1 Infection
The same types of precautions you take to protect yourself and your family from the influenza virus can also work to help protect your dog.
- Hygiene and sanitation are the most important aspects.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes.
- Wash your hands frequently.
- Avoid contact with your dog, if possible, while you are sick and do not allow sick people to handle your dog.
As stated previously, Buck is now recovering and doing well. So, there’s no need to panic. However, being aware of the potential for spread of the virus to your dog is important as is taking simple precautions to protect your dog’s health.
Other Pets Affected by the H1N1 Influenza Virus
Besides dogs, the H1N1 influenza virus has also been found in cats and ferrets. Swine can become infected with the disease as can turkeys. There is also one report of a cheetah becoming infected.
